U7 Objectives

The decisions made by the G7 – on subjects ranging from trade to the environment to public health – have a significant impact on cities around the world. The Urban7 was established based on the shared conviction of its members that policies developed together – by all levels of government – will be better able to address global challenges. Since its launch in 2021 by Core Cities UK, the G7 Urban7 (U7) advocates for a continuous dialogue between the G7 nations and municipal actors.

In 2022, Germany holds the G7 presidency and the U7 alliance addresses this Presidency and all members of G7 with the the aim to be recognised as a G7 Engagement Group.

Our mission - Embedding local leaders’ voices in global processes

Local governments are at the forefront of building a sustainable, inclusive future. They are the government level closest to citizens, delivering concrete solutions on the ground. Yet, they have to operate within legal and financial frameworks set at national and international levels of government.

The Urban7 call for a fundamental shift: cities, towns, and regions must be recognised as essential partners in shaping global policy.

To meet today’s global challenges — from climate action to democratic renewal — we need true multilevel governance.  It is our conviction that by better embedding local leadership in international processes we can strengthen democracy and cooperation, ensure solutions are grounded in local realities, and accelerate progress towards joint G7 objectivs from sustainability to inclusivity and properity.

Objectives

U7 Group’s objectives are to:

  • Recognise local and regional governments as key partners for strengthening democracy, sustainable development and economic partnerships by providing them the status of a G7 engagement group and give them a voice in international decision-making processes.
  • Establish structured collaboration between national governments and local leaders on regulatory and fiscal frameworks relevant for urban transformations.
  • Align G7 priorities and measures with local efforts to drive sustainable, climate-neutral, and socially inclusive development.
  • Foster urban cooperation with the Global South to encourage peer to peer exchange and learning for actively shaping sustainable urbanisation across the globe together.
